Blue Monday £3.50 Alex James is an unlikely cheese maker. As Blur’s bass player, James claims to have drunk a million pounds worth of champagne in three years. Blue Monday is a creamy Shropshire blue, sharp with a very faint sourness, named in honour of New Order’s eighties classic. It’s an excellent name, and a superb cheese. Blacksticks Blue £3.10 It is the only British truly soft blue that exceeds the continental equivalents in both taste and texture. Since its conception in 2003, Blacksticks Blue has developed a strong nationwide following and a clear reputation as a great cheese with the recognition it deserves. The Blacksticks brand has won seven major cheese awards in 2008 and a grand total of 55 awards since the launch of Blacksticks Blue in 2003. Godminster Organic £3.20 A fabulous cheese! In its distinctive purple wax, Godminster Organic Cheddar is a powerful cheese with a real edge to it - wow! Made near Bruton in Somerset, this may be a relative newcomer compared to the Keens and Montgomerys of this world, but it just shows the quality of some of the newer cheeses. Wigmore Ewes £4.20 Wigmore is a ewe's milk cheese with a heavenly soft paste and delicate creamy taste. Mellows perfectly with age. Wigmore has won multiple Gold Awards at the British Cheese Awards. Made by legend Anne Wigmore of Village Maid Cheese near Reading, Berks. Celtic Promise £4.20 Celtic promise begins life as Teifi cheese, made in West Wales. James Aldridge ripens the cheese in cider, which gives it the distinctive orange rind and fruity smell. This cheese has been highly praised and won Supreme Champion at the 1998 British Cheese Awards. This is an unpasteurised cows' milk cheese made with vegetarian rennet. Brie de Meaux £3.10 The production area of Brie de Meaux lays about 50 km (31 miles) east of Paris. Brie de Meaux is an ancient cheese. The oldest evidence is found in the chronicles of Charlemagne. The Emperor tasted the cheese in the small city of Brie in the year 774. During the French Revolution, Louis XVI last wish was supposedly for a final taste of Brie. In 1814, the Prince de Talleyrand organized a European tournament during the Congress of Vienna. Brie de Meaux was awarded the first prize and declared "Le Roi des Fromages" ( The King of Cheeses). Brie de Meaux has the sweetness one would expect from a top world's cheese. Brie de Meaux delivers a very soft combination of hazelnut and fruit aromas.
